Are your fruits and veggies going to waste? A past study revealed that the average American household throws out $300 worth of spoiled produce a year, mostly because it goes bad before it reaches the table. Here's how to buy and store a few Zone-favorable perishables, keeping your produce in top shape:

Avocados
The problem: You can't see the flesh until you cut it open — and then you must use it, ripe or not.
Solution: Store avocados at room temperature, not in the fridge. Check for ripeness by cupping fruit in your palm and gently closing fingers around it. If it gives to your touch, it's ready to go.

Raspberries
The problem: You discover that half the plastic box is mushy when you drop its contents into the strainer to wash.
Solution: Avoid baskets with juice stains. (Check the underside, peeking at the paper that typically lines the bottom of the box.) Store in fridge without washing and use within two days. When ready to eat, do not wash under running water. Instead, fill a bowl with cold water and drop berries in, then strain.

Strawberries
The problem: More mushiness
Solution: Choose evenly ripened berries, avoiding containers with white-topped berries. Store in fridge, unwashed. Just before you eat them, run berries under cool water, then remove the stem — if you cut the stem off first, the berries become waterlogged.

Tomatoes
The problem: Winter tomatoes go from rock hard to flabby, bypassing the firm-but-succulent stage.
Solution: Skip all regular-size tomatoes in the winter, using canned ones instead in recipes. Your best bets for salads are cherry and grape tomatoes, which are crisp, juicy, and flavor-packed all year round. When tomatoes are in season, store them at room temperature, stem-side up. Do not refrigerate.

Are you an expert at finding reasons to fudge the diet guidelines? That puts you in the company of a large percentage of dieters. Then, alongside each excuse, list a way to address it that makes sense for the way you live. If your excuse for adding sugar to your coffee is "That's what I'm used to," write down "Get used to artificial sweetener or unsweetened coffee."

  4. Prepare chopped vegetables once a week and keep them in the fridge.

While spending a lot of money or owning several sets of glasses is unnecessary, here are a few things to keep in mind when you're choosing stemware.

  • Choose a glass with a bowl that's narrower at the top. This helps concentrate a wine's bouquet so you can appreciate not just the taste and look of your wine but the aroma too.
  • Avoid cut crystal and colored glasses. You want to appreciate the beautiful color of your wine without the glass getting in the way.
  • While a thin stem looks especially elegant, it can break easily. If you're looking for glasses for everyday use, choose ones with sturdier stems.
  • Some glasses feature a flared edge — the glass is wider at the top than the bottom — but this shape makes spilling more likely. Try the more standard, tapered shape, and look for a very thin lip. This helps the wine flow into your mouth more easily.
  • Stemless wineglasses are all the rage, and they look great on your table, but some experts believe that the heat from your hands can change your wine's flavor.
