Zinc is also associated with a reduction in cold symptoms, general immune support, and wound healing.

The good news is that there are many Zone-friendly foods that can boost your zinc intake. For example, a 3-ounce portion of beef or chicken delivers between 20 to 30 percent of the daily zinc requirement. Oysters are high in zinc too. For vegetarians, good sources of zinc include:

  • Yogurt, 1 cup: 15 percent of daily requirement
  • Cashews, unsalted: 10 percent of daily requirement
  • Chickpeas, 1/2 cup: 8 percent of daily requirement
  • Swiss cheese, 1 ounce: 8 percent of daily requirement
