Dietary Guidelines
Did you hear about new official food pyramid guidelines?
The newguidelines are about to put it this way: "Choose a diet that is
low in saturatedfat and cholesterol and moderate in total fat." Why? This
is very isnteresting. They seem to be listening to the food industry leaders!
The foodindustry's own research showed that even with the same amount
of maximalrecommended fat consumption, a "moderate-fat diet" is perceived
as easierto follow than a "low-fat diet."
As you can see, there's anotherchange and it is in the specification of
the fat type that is necessary tolimit - our diets should be low not in
"total fat" as we have now, but insaturated fat and cholesterol. However,
the recommended maximum fat intakeis still 30 percent of total calories,
or 65 grams a day.
How about carbohydrates? Not specified, we're advised only againstsugars:
"Choose beverages and foods that limit your intake of sugars."
How about meats? Food industry leaders again have their point of view
beheard. Says executive director of nutrition department at the National
Cattlemen'sBeef Association:
"Food choices should take into account the important nutrients in foods
that are needed for healthy diets"
Now, what the official guidelines don't tell us? They don't tell us
that there's very little scieintific backup for limiting our fat intake!
