Department of Neurology, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH: Effects of unbalanced diets on cerebral glucose metabolism.

The findings indicate that long-term moderate ketonemia does not significantly alter brain glucose phosphorylation. However, even marginal protein deficiency, when coupled with a carbohydrate-rich diet, depresses cerebral glucose utilization to a degree often seen in metabolic encephalopathies. Our results support the clinical contention that protein dietary deficiency coupled with increased carbohydrate intake can lead to CNS dysfunction.

Department of Neurology, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri: A case report and review of the literature

A 5-year-old girl developed recurrent prolonged episodes of severe oral apraxia, dysarthria, and drooling. Anti epileptic drugs were not effective, although there was some improvement when they were combined with a Ketogenic diet.

Nutrition Department, Case Western Reserve University, School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio: Effects of a Ketogenic diet on tumor

Within 7 days of initiating the Ketogenic diet, blood glucose levels declined to low-normal levels and blood ketones were elevated twenty to thirty fold. Results of PET scans indicated a 21.8% average decrease in glucose uptake at the tumor site in both subjects. One patient exhibited significant clinical improvements in mood and new skill development during the study. She continued the Ketogenic diet for an additional twelve months, remaining free of disease progression.  CONCLUSION: While this diet does not replace conventional antineoplastic treatments, these preliminary results suggest a potential for clinical application which merits further research.

Nutrition Department, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio: Implementing a Ketogenic diet in pediatric patients with cancer.

Traditionally, a Ketogenic diet is given to drug-resistantchildren with epilepsy to improve seizure control. A Ketogenic diet was provided to a select group of pediatric patients with advanced-stage cancer to test the effects of dietary induced ketosis on tumor glucose metabolism. Inducing a Ketogenic state in patients with cancer may be a useful adjunct to cancer treatment by affecting tumor glucose metabolism and growth while maintaining the patient's nutritional status. Preliminary use of the MCT oil-based diet suggestsa potential in pediatric patients with cancer.
